Vodafone Ghana Initiates Red Alert for Flood Victims
28 June 2010
Vodafone Ghana Foundation has launched a unique text-based campaign known as Red Alert to assist victims of the recent floods in the country. Red Alert is a platform that the Vodafone Ghana Foundation uses to support victims of natural and other forms of disaster.
Through the Red Alert platform, Vodafone Ghana Foundation is giving Ghanaians the opportunity to offer critical help to those disadvantaged by the floods. The funds that will be generated from public support through the Red Alert platform will be topped up by the Vodafone Ghana Foundation to purchase items that are urgently needed by the affected people.
Red Alert is powered by the short code 133, which allows Vodafone customers to donate GHC1 each time they text the word “help” to the short code 133.
Any other form of support needed by the flood victims will be provided through the funds that will be generated.
Speaking in an interview in Accra, Ike Cudjoe, Head of Corporate Communications at Vodafone Ghana, said Vodafone was moved by the heartbreaking images of flood victims and felt a need to do something about the situation.
“Vodafone believes that this is a shining example of telecom companies using technology as a force for good," he said.
